Our fellow koi club and founding club member Pam Kinkade passed away on Sunday, June 13 of natural causes. Pam was dedicated to the health of her koi and is responsible for teaching many of us the proper protocols for testing your koi and making sure your pond is a healthy environment for your koi. She loved her pond and koi and was always there to share her knowledge and experience for all club members. Some of our most memorable meetings have been at her home in her courtyard surrounded by beautiful pond and koi. Her hospitality and generous gifts of time will be missed by us all. Arrangements are being made through Palm Mortuary and will be posted here when available. On Saturday Pam sent an email out to some of her friends. If you didn't receive it, please take a moment to watch what she felt was important enough to share.

The Chili Cookoff was so much fun! We had seven fantastic varieties of chili and all of the fixings.
Kent, Scott and DeEtta were the judges and blind tasted over and over again until they came up with the top three!
The rest of the day was spent pond side catching up with old friends and watching the koi, kids and dogs who came along. Once everyone gets me their recipes I will send them via email to the membership.

The calls and emails are starting to come in from people with ponds and koi who need help. Encourage them to come to meetings and be active in the club. If there is an emergency refer them to Drs. Sulliban. Be careful introducing koi from these ponds into your collection. Remember the rule, quarantine, quarantine, quarantine.

We will have another weekend meeting in May. Watch the calendar.

March Chili Cook Off

Join your club members to kick off the 2010 season! Bring your favorite chili recipe to Kent and Janon's house on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 pm. The weather will be perfect, koi will be swimming, friends will be reconnecting! RSVP Janon to let her know how many chili bowls to put out! BYOB if you want beer or wine! See you then!

Next Meeting

To jump start the new season let's have a Chili Cookoff! Kent and Janon will host the event later in March. Instead of a regular Tuesday night meeting we are going to arrange a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to get everyone together again and decided what events we will be doing this year. SO get those favorite chili recipes out! It will be great to see all our koi friends again and relax around the pond while tasting and voting on CHILI!

The Family Fur and Fun Festival last month was like having a mini koi show. There were five tanks with favorite koi for members homes. The public was invited to vote for a favorite and the response was great. Over 500 votes were cast. Kids and adults alike were able to ask guestions about the koi from club members who monitored the tanks making sure some of the "furry four legged friends" didn't jump in for a drink! The best comment heard over and over again was "are they real?"!

The weather was great, the attendance was in the thousands and all the koi arrived home safe and sound.

FOR THE MONTHS OF NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER there no meetings are planned due to the holidays. We will resume our regular meeting schedule in January.

Two Events in October Not To Miss!

Saturday October 10 is the Family Fur & Fun Festival in Summerlin. The Koi Club will have a booth to promote the hobby. Plus, this year we will be having a "Mini" Koi Show. We are going to ask the public to choose their favorite koi in each category. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. If you would like to bring be sure to attend the September 22 Koi Club Meeting so you can be part of the fun.

Family Fur & Fun is free to the public. It is all about families and their pets. The SPCA will have animals for adoption. Information booths, Raffles, hands-on crafts and activities for children and much more. Bring your pet if they are friendly. For more information go to: www.familyfurandfun.com

Last year there were thousands of families there so don't miss it.

BARSTOW KOI FARM TRIP October 24. Space is limited to sign up for this trip to Barstow where Ken Liu will host club members to view and purchase koi pulled from his ponds. This is a unique opportunity to see a real "koi farm", meet the breeder and purchase a great addition to your pond.

JULY 28 Meeting "DESIGN A DREAM POND"

This month's meeting will give you a chance to design a dream pond. Derek & Melissa Schilz are new members who have a hole in their backyard and that's it. They are bravely hosting their first meeting to take advantage of club members experiences, expertise, knowledge, creativity and opinions before they get started.

We all would have loved to have this available to us before we build our ponds, right? SO show up with your designs, your books, your dreams and let's help them get it right the first time!

Because this is their first meeting ever please RSVP so they know what and who to expect.

June Monthly Meeting

If you want and underwater camera hooked to your computer monitor or phone we can show you how to do it! Come join us for our regular monthly meeting .

James & Crystal Cloud will host the June Meeting at 8672 Rising Rock Cr, Las Vegas, 89129 . There is a security gate so dial the Cloud residence if it isn't open. We like to get started with the Pot Luck at 6:00 and begin our presentation at 6:45. We have BBQ pulled pork and chicken for BBQ sandwiches so bring something to accompany this. Salad, desert, etc??

We will be presenting a program on ALGAE CONTROL!! What to do, what not to do. Also Kent and Janon will be showing a preview of the long awaited book from Japan called "Mondo Nishikigoi" They have obtained the exclusive right to this book for the US and Canada.

Our Virtual Pond Tour was a success. To the new members who joined us last month we are pleased to welcome you and hope to see you on Tuesday the 23rd.

VIRTUAL POND TOUR

VIRTUAL POND TOUR & BBQ Saturday May 30 from 12:00 - 4:00 pm the Club is hosting a Virtual Pond Tour. Club members will provide pictures of their ponds and filtration systems which will be shown on a big screen. See a 8500 gallon pond and quaratine set up. Get educated before you build or upgrade your existing pond. All this while enjoying a BBQ, raffle, meeting new members and lots of fish talk.

LAS VEGAS KOI CLUB MEETING MINUTES FOR 2/24/09
AT THE HOME OF Pam Kinkade/ 6:30 PM

1) Call to order.

2) Introduction of club member’s and guests.

3) Approval of minutes of the January 27th, 2009 meeting.

a) Treasurer’s report – we have a balance of $3,337.87 in our clubs account due to membership renewals and recent raffles.

4) New Business

San Diego Koi Show – A good time had by all in attendance! Vendors expressed excellent foot traffic, and seminars were very worthwhile.

Our vets Jason and Jamie expressed the KHA certification course was worth the time and effort they put into the course prior to the full day of lab required to receive their certification. New products on the market that caught the eye of our vets is “Min Fin”. Unfortunately it currently is sold in large quantities, but our vets Jason and Jamie will break it down according to pond size for treatment purposes. Remember, you must know what diseases you are fighting before a treatment is disbursed!

A link to “affordable” microscopes will be attached to our blog page for those members’ seeking equipment. Thru her wet lab attendance, DeEtta found a reputable dealer with prices all can afford.

Kent and Janon met with Ken Lu of Barstow Koi to see if we could arrange for another field trip for the Koi Club. Ken was very positive about having another tour. The club will need to discuss a date, possibly sometime in June.

The next AKCA seminar will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, a date is yet to be determined possibly combined with a Koi Club show in that area.

Webpage - Our new blog is up and running, please check out our new site and sign up as a “follower” to the blog to receive current information on our Clubs activities. The site is http://lasvegaskoiclub.blogspot.com/. Please get Janon pictures of your ponds so that she can attach them to the web site for all to enjoy!

Pond Tour – We will have a pond tour this year around the first week of June, with events at Plant World on May 2nd and 3rd to pass our flyers promoting the tour and to sell fish to raise monies for the club. It was voted on by the club to do away with the printing up of a “tour booklet”, and distributing a one page flyer that will be passed out for “free” to all those interested. This will cut down on the cost to the club, and promote a larger attendance base. Donna Stidham has volunteered to assist with putting together the flyer, as well as, Janon and Kent Wallace who will work on the map that will be placed on the reverse side of the flyer for all participants in the tour. Please let Janon know if you would like your pond on tour, or if you would like to advertise your business. We are looking for additional members to volunteer, perhaps a Chairman for the project?!? Let DeEtta know if you would be interested.

Spring Protocol – Watch your fish! As the water temperature rises, your fish will become more active. Perform your water tests to be sure all levels are healthy for your fish. If your fish appear to be “flashing” it would be advised to take skin scrapings to see what bugs you may be fighting. Don’t hesitate, ponds can go downhill fast! If your fish appear to be happy and healthy, don’t treat!

5) Our next meeting will be held at the home of Janon and Kent Wallace on March 24th.

AKCA Conference in San Diego

This is last years Grand Champion at the San Diego Koi Show.

Kent and Danielle are running like crazy to get on the road tomorrow to this year's show which is combination with the AKCA Conference. They will be setting up the vendor booths for Living Water Solutions and Koi Kouture. I will be driving down on Friday. It isn't too late to make plans to see some wonderful koi. But if you can't make it follow this blog instead. I PROMISE to post pictures of all the great koi and friends. Check your water temp before you feed!

I was so tempted to feed this weekend and I did - just a little bit. They are up and moving around the pond and the water temperature is at 53 degrees so it's save... at least for a few days. I am watching the weather reports and know it could change at any minute so I won't feed for another day or two and then only if it continues to be warm. Imagine what you would feel like if you returned from a mass feeding at a Super Bowl Party and your digestive system shut down. That's what we can do to our koi if we feed them and the temp drops below 50F . Of course we feed them better than the standard Super Bowl menu of dogs, sausages, mac and cheese, nachos, cheesecake, cheese dip, cheese tray, brie cheese, cheese its and CheeseOhs!
Maybe we should all be eating wheat germ koi food!
